European CCM manufacturers

The Fuel Cell Compass showcases CCM production sites in Europe. The fuel cell and electrolyzer sectors have continued to grow, reflecting the increasing demand for hydrogen solutions in energy, mobility, and industrial decarbonization. Due to the sharp rise in electrolyzer manufacturing capacity, the map distinguishes between production sites for electrolyzers and fuel cells. Germany continues to be the manufacturing powerhouse across Europe in both cases.

Accelerated momentum in electrolyzer production

Although Europe's production capacity for PEM fuel cells currently meets demand, the growth of the hydrogen economy is now limited by the availability of green hydrogen. Consequently, the industry is focusing on rapidly expanding PEM electrolyzer manufacturing to meet the growing demand for green hydrogen across industrial sectors, power generation, and seasonal energy storage. Large, new, gigawatt-scale electrolyzer factories, particularly in Germany, are being developed to provide enough green hydrogen for current and future fuel cell applications.

Collaboration and localization on the rise

Another emerging development is the push to localize supply chains. European manufacturers are focusing more on building partnerships within the continent to reduce their reliance on overseas suppliers, especially for essential components such as membranes, catalysts, and bipolar plates.

Important Notice

Although the “Fuel Cell Atlas” maps look at the fuel cell and hydrogen market from many different angles and business areas, they do not claim to be exhaustive. Nevertheless, all followers are invited to contribute to the topicality. The Fuel Cell Compass team will be happy to incorporate suggestions and additions submitted upon review.
